Minecraft – create your own world (quick review)

It’s the first post since a long time, because I had no time. But as from now I’ll try to post regularly.

Minecraft Man with two animals

Minecraft is created by Markus Persson who is also known as “Notch”. Of course he has some helpers, but he is the main coder and the game designer. In this game, you craft things with things you get when you mine ;) . Ok, MC is probably not that simple. Continue reading if you wish to experience more.

You can download Minecraft here. For the current Beta Version, you’ll pay 20 dollars. (Believe me, for a addictive game like this one, it’s not that much ;) ) After the download, you have to create an account at minecraft.net. It’s your unique Minecraft account and you have to use it when you log in.

What is Minecraft?

If you let Minecraft generate your own world, you will spawn randomly. It will look like this:

Minecraft Spawn Screenshot

In Minecraft, there is a day-night cycle. During the night, it is dark (really dark!) and there spawn zombies, creeper and skeletons everywhere. Of course, they try to kill you all the time. So first, you have to build a house or a mould. It doesn’t really matter, because the first night is boring anyways. (You can’t see anything, later you got some torches to light your environment) The best thing you can do, is cutting trees and collecting wood.

Minecraft Woodcutting

If you have enough wood (10 is enough), you can use the crafting tool. This is one of the most important thing in Minecraft. The game is all about collecting resources and crafting them into useful things. So press “I” to open the crafting-window. Put the wood onto the grid to craft it. You should now see wooden planks.

Crafting Window

Now you have to put 4 wooden planks onto the grid to get a crafting table. The crafting table allows you to use a 3×3 grid to craft your things. The bar down below helps you to use objects with numbers on your keyboard (1-9). You can “mount” those objects during the game.

Minecraft Crafting

Now draw the crafting table into the bar down below. Let’s do the rest, before the sun goes down!

Now you should be able to build a kind of a wall around you to survive the night. It is highly recommended to collect or to craft some torches, before the sun goes down, so you can work at night.

Minecraft Building

And why is there a “Mine” in front of the “craft”?

Mining in Minecraft, is a very important part. Most of the objects need resources (mostly various metals) or specials materials you can only find deep, deep under the ground. You can craft your own pickaxes out of wood, stone, steel and many more, like this:

Minecraft Pickaxe

Now you have a wooden pickaxe. You can start mining wherever you want. You will find materials like iron, diamonds, gold and many other materials. Here, I just found some coal: (You better pay attention because lava is extremely dangerous!)

After a while, you’ll have enough resources to build your own wold! Here is a boat that is built of a friend of mine:

Links & More

As you probably noticed, your Minecraft doesn’t exactly look like mine. It’s because I’ve a texture pack installed. If you get bored of the look of your Minecraft, you can create and download your own texture pack here. (Painterly Pack)

If you want to know more about Minecraft or just the complete crafting table, please visit the Minecraft wiki.

Last but not least, I want to introduce to you our own Minecraft server. It is running Bukkit 1.4, that is very stable and lag free. Feel free to join us! Just type in mine-host.org as IP in the Minecraft window. There, you can ask me if you have any questions. If you don’t want to join, you can of course also post a comment down below. ;)

The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting and combat. Gameplay in its commercial release has two principal modes: survival, which requires players to acquire resources and maintain their health and hunger; and creative, where players have an unlimited supply of resources, the ability to fly, and no health or hunger. ….–
